Access to Services

How is access to health services provided? 

Beneficiaries have access to healthcare services as follows:

1. Direct Access
2. Access by Referral
 

1. Direct Access

Within the GHS, beneficiaries ave direct access to the following healthcare providers:
 
A. Personal doctor (PD)
All beneficiaries have direct access to their personal doctor provided they are registered in his Beneficiaries List.
 
B. Outpatient specialist by paying a Personal Contribution I 
Beneficiaries have direct access to outpatient specialist healthcare services as outpatients provided they pay a Personal Contribution I.
 
C. Gynaecologist/obstetrician
Female beneficiaries who have attained the age of fifteen (15) have direct access to healthcare services offered by gynaecologists/obstetricians without paying Personal Contribution I.
 
D. Accident and Emergency Department (A&E)
In cases of accidents and emergencies beneficiaries have direct access to A&Es.
 
E. Dentist
Beneficiaries have direct access to preventive dental healthcare.
 
F. Ambulance
Beneficiaries have direct access to ambulance services in cases of emergency. 
 

2.  Access by Referral 

Within the GHS, beneficiaries will have access with referral to the following healthcare providers:
 
A. Outpatient specialist (without paying a Personal Contribution I)
Beneficiaries will have access to outpatient specialist healthcare services as outpatients after the issue of a referral by:
  • a personal doctor (PD), or
  • an Accident and Emergency Department (A&E), or
  • a hospital
B. Hospital for inpatient healthcare services
Beneficiaries will have access to a hospital for the provision of inpatient healthcare services after the issue of a referral by:
  • an outpatient specialist (OS), or 
  • an Accident and Emergency Department (A& E)
C. Pharmacy
Beneficiaries will have access to a pharmacy for the provision of healthcare services after the issue of a prescription by:
  • a personal doctor (PD), or        
  • an outpatient specialist (OS), or
  • a dentist, or
  • an Accident and Emergency Department (A&E)
D. Allied health professionals
Beneficiaries will have access to laboratories, nurses, midwifes and allied health professionals (speech pathologists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, clinical dieticians) after the issue of a referral by:
  • a personal doctor (PD), or
  • an outpatient specialist (OS)
