Clinical Guidelines are divided into two categories:

In accordance with the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Troika and the preparation for the introduction of the GHS, the Ministry of Health (MH) in cooperation with the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) have established groups for the preparation, implementation and monitoring of Clinical Guidelines/Clinical Pathways and laboratory algorithms (protocols).

The CGs/CPs and laboratory algorithms that have been developed are based on detailed scientific publications by reliable organisations (e.g. NICE of the United Kingdom) and have been drafted on the basis of scientific assessment and adjustment to the Cyprus context.

They are addressed to health professionals in Cyprus and aim at assisting in the provision of evidence-based healthcare thus contributing to the improvement of the quality of the healthcare services provided while reducing cost.  It is expected that health professionals will take these guidelines seriously into account while exercising their duties and use them as a support tool.  Undoubtedly, they cannot replace the attending physicians and their scientific judgement or their responsibility regarding the management of their patients.

Medical officers from both the public and private sector, via the Cyprus Medical Association and the various Scientific Societies of Cyprus as well as other health professionals have contributed to their drafting.  The development of CGs/CPs and laboratory algorithms is a dynamic process based on the most recent knowledge about a specific disease.  Even though all efforts will be made to enrich and review them every three years in accordance with the most recent research/scientific data, the authors, the MH and the HIO disclaim all responsibility regarding their accuracy or completeness as well as their possible subsequent incorrect use  (Disclaimer).
